Restaurant menus on the web
A menu is the one thing a restaurant website has to communicate. Across the 127 sites in our 2026 benchmark, we could detect a menu on 59.8% of them. The rest either had no menu we could read, or had it in a form a browser and a search engine cannot reliably parse.
How restaurants publish menus
- Structured HTML7.9% · n=6
- PDF46.1% · n=35
- On the page, unstructured42.1% · n=32
- Mixed (HTML + PDF)3.9% · n=3
Why a browser-native menu matters
- — It loads instantly on a phone, where most menu-reading happens.
- — Search engines can index the dishes, so the restaurant shows up for them.
- — Assistive technology can read it aloud.
- — It can be kept current in seconds, not re-exported and re-uploaded.
The mobile test
Open the menu on a phone on a slow connection. If it is a PDF that has to download and pinch-zoom, most visitors will not wait. If it is text on the page, it is already there.
